Why America Needs A Domestic Energy Policy That Works

Today, Saudi Arabia announced it had arrested 113 Al Qaeda militants. Their targets included energy facilities in Saudi Arabia.

This is another poignant sign of why we need to have nuclear power, domestic drilling and wind power as major sources of energy in America. If the attacks had succeeded, it would probably have hurt us both monetarily and in relations with Saudi Arabia, as its citizens may have blamed America for the attack. Deregulating the American energy sector, and allowing innovative efficiency to take hold, would do a great deal in stopping Al Qaeda and preventing the kinds of economic disruptions a successful attack of this type would have today.

Obama points to “Poverty” in Radio Address

President Obama demonstrated his biting deductive reasoning this morning as he released a radio address where he announces his decision that Al-Qaeda in Yemen was in fact behind the Christmas morning attempted bombing of an airliner after landing at Detroit Airport.?

What I found considerably perplexing was when the President made this comment:

?We know that [Abdulmutallab] travelled to Yemen, a country grappling with crushing poverty and deadly insurgencies…?

A skilled politician our President is, he can indirectly link something to another when all of the evidence points to the opposite conclusion.? This was an attempt to plant a seed in the minds of Americans that the “crushing poverty” contributes heavily?to the existence of terrorism, particularly in this case.? However, it turns out that the opposite holds true, as Abdulmutallab was a well-off and well-educated.? The same with the mastermind of the London bomings in 2005, not to mention many of the 9/11 hijackers as well…

Get Rid of Napolitano

As is well-known by now, last week there was a suicide bomber attack on a plane from Amsterdam to Detroit. The attack, fortunately, failed, as the explosive device failed to go off. The alleged terrorist is suspected to be connected to at least one terrorist organization. He claimed, initially at least, to be connected to Al Qaeda.

This, obviously, is both good news and bad. First, it’s good in that nobody died, a terrorist was captured and now we know where to concentrate more efforts on the international scale. The bad news is that some people are just plain stupid, including Think Progress’ Matthew Yglesias, who wrote the other day that, “Ultimately, it does no favors to anyone to blow this sort of thing out of proportion. The United States could not, of course, be ?devastated? by anything resembling this scheme. We ought to be clear on that fact. We want to send the message around the world that this sort of vile attempt to slaughter innocent people is not, at the end of the day, anything resembling a serious challenge to American power. It?s attempted murder, it?s wrong, we should try to stop it, but it?s really not much more than that.”

Even worse, however, is the reaction from Department of Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano. “The system worked,” according to Napolitano. Given that it took a failed attempt plus civilian passengers to subdue the attempted terrorist, I’d say the system failed. Plus, the guy was on a watch list, which is particularly poignant given his father reported him as a potential threat two years ago. (See the video of Napolitano’s inane comments here.)

To quote Jonah Goldberg from The Corner yesterday, “If the White House wants to assure people that it takes the war on terror seriously (a term Robert Gibbs used this morning by the way), they could start by firing this patenly unqualified hack.” Personally, I think “man-caused disasters” are a worse threat than conservatives, Secretary Napolitano. You had better figure that out soon, or your job will be gone. Unfortunately, this will probably not happen until after Americans have died as a result of your incompetence. Yes, as they said on the Real Clear Politics blog, it’s your job to reassure the American public as part of an overall security standpoint. However- and I’ll finish with a quote from the RCP blog- “…she should be smart enough to find a way of doing that without treating the American people like a bunch of morons and dupes.”

Update: According to The Washington Monthly blog, President Obama has been paying close attention to the Al Qaeda threat from Yemen. Kudos to President Obama for doing so.

Update II: The Heritage Foundation’s Morning Bell points out the continued failure by the Obama administration to take the proper steps to protect this country from terrorists, and offers three steps going forward.

Update III: A friend pointed out on Facebook that I misspelled Secretary Napolitano’s name- it is corrected.

Update IIII (last one, I hope): Two links from where I posted this at Race42012 showing Secretary Napolitano backtracking on her statements about the system working well. Too little, too late, I think.

“One MILLION Dollars…” bum bum bum…

Now, everyone here is well aware of my unfortunate (and unhealthy) addiction to Morning Joeon MSNBC.? So I won’t continue to apologize for it.? While watching this morning, I couldn’t help but notice that when Mika Brzezinski was doing her typical short news stories on the hour (in otherwords, when she’s doing her real job masquerading as a journalist) she mentioned the cost of the recently terminated CIA program to track and kill Al Qaeda leaders and operatives.? I will eschew going anywhere near the fact that the?people who?are outraged by a CIA operation to kill bad guys are the same people who?got mad at President Bush for not pursuing and killing the bad guys because of the Iraq War… blah… I digress.

One million dollars.? That was what MSNBC was reporting; that the CIA program that was recently terminated was a “whopping” $1 Million dollars (the same amount of money that belittled Dr. Evil in front of everyone).? Considering that the State of California (or the City of Los Angeles, whichever was dumb enough) flipped the bill for a $1.4 Million funeral for the “King of Pop,” a million dollars to hunt down and kill terrorist (it is dishonest to call it “assassination” when they are part of a trans-national organization and not attached to any state or government officially) who would be more than happy to return the favor aint so bad.?
